Oaxaca Wedding – Yara & Alex

What a wedding!!

When Mexican photographer, Yara, got in touch on Instagram regarding her elopement in Iceland (hear me out, yes this is a post for their Mexican wedding!) I was absolutely thrilled and excited to capture the most dreamlike two days for her and husband Alex. During the prep I asked if Alex and Yara were planning an official wedding at home in Mexico, the answer was a ‘hmm, we dunno, maybe!’ I joked (but not really) ‘please bring me along if you do!!’

A couple of years and a pandemic later, this actually happened. Yara and Alex flew me out to Oaxaca to document their civil wedding and full wedding at Criollo. Now, my Spanish is ok, but I am not fluent by any means, so testament to my experience, I could follow the subtleties, emotions and nuances of speech during the ceremony to enable me to create the best images possible. It was an emotional ceremony with personal readings and many happy tears!

Prior to visiting Iceland with Yara and Alex, I had no idea what Alex did for his profession, it wasn’t until someone came running up to Alex chatting excitedly and asking for a selfie that I asked him. Yara replied ‘he’s kinda famous at home, but this sort of thing doesn’t happen all the time’ and they both laughed. That night after shooting, Alex tagged me in an instagram story and my followers were going up a crazy amount so obviously I looked him up and found out he’s a pretty big deal and a very famous comedian.. so this meant at the wedding there were a lot of funny people and some of the comedy elite, sadly lost on me but thankfully a smile and a laugh is universal and this is how I was able to document a wedding in another country without being able to speak the language.

Heading out to Oaxaca with Yara and Alex and being trusted to photograph not just one, but all three of their ceremonies, was an honour and a career highlight – I love that Yara told me I am the only person other than them present for all three of their weddings.

I’d love to photograph another wedding in Oaxaca, being able to travel and do the job I love really is the stuff dreams are made of, and I thank my lucky stars every day.

Here are a few from the main wedding, I will follow up with the Iceland post very soon.

I hope you enjoy the images from Yara & Alex’s Oaxaca Wedding Photography!
