Chris and Alice had originally booked Combe House Hotel for their wedding which was a venue I used to work at often, but sadly their booking was cancelled after Combe House was taken over by a chain of hotels wishing to do a complete refurbishment, leaving Chris and Alice and several other couples to find a new venue, luckily for this sweet couple Powderham Castle was available and this also gave Alice and Chris the opportunity to have their ceremony at the Exeter University chapel, so everything worked out perfectly.
From the very first enquiry I had a good feeling about Alice and Chris, they were so friendly and laid back and placed their complete trust in us as their wedding photographers, we barely heard from them! We haven’t had a Powderham Castle Wedding in many years so it was great to come back to this beautiful venue with such an awesome couple. We met Alice and Chris at the Magdalen Chapter on the morning of their special day, I (Mike) was just in time to see the arrival of a stunning V.W. Camper Van to collect Chris and his Groomsmen, before heading to The Imperial, a well known old Haunt for anyone who’s ever lived near Exeter! Anna stayed at the hotel to capture some of the bridal preparations for Alice and her Bridesmaids enjoying the hectic moments before leaving for the St Mary Harris Chapel of the Holy Trinity on the Exeter University campus, which was a wonderful bright space to work in. We’ve never had pleasure of working there before but as you can see from the pictures, it is an amazing space. A towering ceiling and a college style seating arrangement make for some beautiful photos, huge floor to ceiling windows create slices of perfect light across the floor. We would love to work there again in the future.
After a moving and often hilarious ceremony (we particularly liked the personal element of Chris’s old House Master taking part in the service which added a touch of humour). We followed the camper van onto Powderham Castle for the reception.
The grounds at Powderham Castle are truly beautiful; perfectly manicured gardens, beautiful old oak trees and deer, lots and lots of deer! After the speeches and first dance we got the chance to photograph Alice & Chris in the courtyard using some off camera flash – with the help of a few drinks and a bit of taxi-dodging (Cue ‘Game on’ – if you’re a 90’s child you’ll know the reference!)
A beautiful day to be part of, with such a laid back and friendly bride and groom at some of Devon’s most beautiful venues, we are lucky to work as Devon wedding photographers, being based in such a beautiful county gives us so many opportunities to shoot idyllic weddings like Chris & Alice’s Powderham Castle wedding.
